The early death of one of the founders of the art group ANK’64, the brilliant Marju Mutsu (1941-1980), shocked the art community at the time but Mutsu nevertheless managed to make a strong contribution to the history of Estonian graphic art during her short career. With her free composition and direct approach, her graphic prints brought freshness to their time, and they still have the same effect today.

The print “Young girl”, executed in the artist’s favorite technique of etching, can be considered one of the artist’s strongest pieces. The protagonist of her prints was very often a young woman, with her dreams, creativity and everyday life. Mutsu expressed the self-awareness and at the same time feminine tenderness of the models with a fine and free line, her spontaneous strokes adding great depth.

“Young girl” is also reproduced in the catalogue of Marju Mutsu’s 1982 memorial exhibition and in the catalogue of the exhibition “Marju Mutsu. A Moment Captured in Etching” held at Kumu in 2009.
