Born in Kuressaare, Marie Dücker (1847-1947) studied painting initially in her hometown, and then under her brother, Eugen Dücker, who had graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1862. In the 1920s, she moved to Düsseldorf to join her brother, where she remained until the end of her life.
Dücker painted mainly flowers and still-lifes reminiscent of old Dutch, often featuring the famous Raeren clay jugs from Belgium. In this work, in addition to the beautifully decorated jug, the juicy, ruddy apples attract attention, the masterful depiction of which makes us want to reach out and grab them with our hands.
