The Estonian art public has known Laurentsius’ gigantic and uniquely styled pop-surrealist painting “The End” for a couple of decades now. Against the backdrop of other works by the pop art master Malle Leis (1940-2017), the painting “The End” acts as an ironic self-reflection on her earlier portfolio.

Leis as a philosopher, as a proponent of one point of view, emerges with extraordinary clarity in this work. The painting postulates on the red fabric that stirs up emotions that the end is something natural and beautiful – look at how calligraphic this English word is written on the painting. On the other hand, Leis reaches out to conceptualism with her work, making us think about what the end is. A thought-provoking piece.
