Malle Leis (1940-2017) was endlessly inspired by flora but she always knew how to find new perspectives and compositions for previously painted plants and flowers. This piece, which dates back to her earlier creative period, expresses pure emotion, a feeling, while at the same time being a botanically realistic depiction of nature.
Leis is known to be a great figure of Estonian pop art and in this piece, the formalism refers to pop. However, the red background can be taken as a kind of abstract one, in which one can sense the dynamic movement of organic shapes. It is this tone that brings out the beauty of the fragile plant in the yellow-green color scheme. The yellow swirling ribbon is, on the one hand, an associative image of a person’s presence, and on the other hand, a creative approach to adding a signature.
