One of Estonia’s most important pop artists, Malle Leis (1940-2017), is on the one hand as precise as a botanist but on the other hand she adds artistic generality to each flower painting, often playing with melancholic, longing moods. A uniform black background is one of the artist’s favorites as it adds depth to the space and also amplifies the tenderness of the bright crocuses, allowing the fragile flowers to stand out particularly well.
