The poet and artist Indrek Hirv has written about his father Louis Pavel’s (1915-1977) studies at Pallas and the later period of the Forest Brotherhood, saying that it was then that his more impressionistic pieces were completed. Incidentally, it was Pavel who in 1942 when Pallas was temporarily allowed to reopen, personally went door to door to gather former students and teachers (“Painter Valdemar Väli”, 2004, p. 12). However, he too eventually ended up in a Soviet prison camp, which left a deep mark on his entire future life and work.

This fresh impressionistic view of the summer coast, with boats waiting among the reeds, carries a direct message – come sail with me! Considering the time of completion, such a bright painting could only have been completed in the artist’s own private space and such an impressionistic approach could only be shown publicly much later.
