The Grand Old Lady of Estonian abstract art, Lola Liivat-Makarova (1928-2025), who worked in Tartu, brought abstractionism to our art together with Ado Lill who worked in Tallinn, in the late 1950s, developing her own unique figurative language and color schemes over the years. Lola Liivat’s visual calling card is blue and also red in all sorts of tonal changes, and often the center of her expressive composition is an abstract dominant bursting with energy.
This motif also comes to the fore in “A symphony of flowers” creating a mood and dominating the picture space. However, a thick layer of paint gives the painting extra texture while the background in lighter colors helps to highlight the center of the painting – this bacchanalia of colorful joy. Enn Põldroos’ words “I am excited by colors!” could also have been said by Lola Liivat.
