The compositions of Linda Kits-Mägi (1916-1990), a graduate of late Pallas, are always classically balanced as is this sunny view of nature. As a talented colorist, the artist, through the mixing of warm but fresh tones, conveys an emotion that is probably familiar to many Estonians – especially after the long, dark winter period, we long to be outside to catch the first rays of sunlight, to notice the emerging nature, flowers and butterflies.

Linda Kits-Mägi also loved to wander in nature. Her summer home in Valgemetsa offered excellent opportunities for this, and the inspiration for this painting probably comes from a place close to home, which the artist has brought to the viewer through impressionistically free, dense brushstrokes.

The bushes in the foreground, shining in bright daylight, are contrasted effectively by the darker forest in the background. In this way, Kits-Mägi conveys genuine impressions of nature through countless nuanced shades of green – have you noticed how many of them there are around us?
