…who painted in greenish browns
a toned landscape study…?
Green slopes, winding river
brown rice, yellow birches,
ochre wounds
and on the soil of the color of caput-mortum
the blue streaks of distance contrast –
from indigo to black.
Who painted?
Excerpt from Lepp Mikko’s poem “Who painted?”
This coloristic masterpiece by Lepo Mikko (1911–1978) whose sensitive use of color was shaped by the strong Pallas school of painting, is a prime example of 1960s decorative landscape art. Two groups of trees are reflected in the same brownish-greenish hues on the water surface.
The entire painting exudes the sensual presence of autumn, and the dreamy view spread before the viewer captivates with its poetry, its perfect composition, even its spatial illusions. Although the painting is primarily a stylization, the depth dimension is clearly visible.
