In the mid-1990s, Estonian avant-garde master Leonhard Lapin (1947-2022) began a new, ambitious series called “Suprealism,” creating his own version of Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism. According to the author himself, one of its goals was to valorize a pop motif, fragments of famous works of art, or an art historical artifact with a rational avant-garde deconstruction, but the result was a de-kitsching of Lapin’s previously characteristic Suprematist art model.
Among others, works inspired by Dali, van Gogh and even Köler were created. In this piece, however, Lapin enters into a dialogue with the work of the American pop art classic Andy Warhol who greatly inspired him in his youth, placing fragments of which in a chic black frame and creating something quintessentially Lapin – witty and avant-garde – through the use of ready-mades.
