Leonhard Lapin (1947-2022), professor emeritus of the Estonian Academy of Arts, artist, architect and poet, was one of the leading figures of the Estonian avant-garde movement. The Machine series, which began in 1973, consisted of abstract and minimalist geometric forms.

In 1974, Man-Machine and Woman-Machine were added, which played an important role in the emergence of erotic art in Estonia and made Lapin internationally known. A little later, he brought the idea of his Machine series to architecture, creating the fresh concept of machine-architecture.

In this particular piece, Lapin uses the mirror effect but still leaves each side’s beauty with its own individual approach to technology. With this simple technique, he states the fact that machines will remain in our lives for a long time, but how we let them in or how to harness them in our service is a matter of each person’s own skills and wisdom.
