Artist, architect, poet, and professor emeritus of the Estonian Academy of Arts, Leonhard Lapin (1947-2022) was one of the leading figures of the avant-garde movement. His Machine series began in 1973, when it consisted of abstract and minimalist geometric forms. In 1974, Man-Machine and Woman-Machine were added to the series, which played an important role in the emergence of erotic art in Estonia and made Lapin internationally known.
A little later, he brought the idea of his Machine series to architecture, creating the new concept of machine-architecture. The erotic-sensual way of imagining is natural and primal for the artist, connecting us directly to nature. However, as an architect, he believes in the future of technology and harmoniously merges the two themes into one in his art.
