The “Codes” series by avant-garde master Leonhard Lapin (1947-2022) began in 2003. “Code 288: Estonian Winter” is one of the most impressive pieces of this line due to its dimensions – it is 183 cm long. The basic shape of “Codes” which mostly consists of abstract strips of the same length and is based on the barcode that characterizes consumer culture but in this particular piece, the stripes of the barcode resemble the irregular pattern of a birch trunk.
Naturally, Lapin introduces a reference to a tree so typical of the Estonian landscape, playing with national identity in an associative way. Lapin constructs the feeling of winter with plaster and stone details glued to acrylic, which have the effect of frozen snow – an exquisite abstract work that seems like a realistic picture.
