Lembit Sarapuu who left us this year – a true original in both art and life – established himself as a painter in the 1960s as a lyricist whose favorite motifs at the time were the female figure and the female nude. In this painting, Sarapuu has deliberately depicted a studio scene with a model who is given an extra touch of sophistication by an ultra-modern top hat and shoes.

Not to mention the hit item of Estonian furniture design at the time – a kidney-shaped table on which the model sits in a graceful pose. The design echoes the stylizing aesthetics of the 1960s at its best. Paintings made with the same model and background as “Seated woman in red shoes” were exhibited at “Lembit Sarapuu. Reality and Truthfulness” that opened at Kumu in 2022.
