Lembit Saarts (1924-2016), one of Tartu’s leading post-Pallas painters, has an intimate and emotional art style. A friend of Ülo Sooster and Henn Roode, Saarts — alongside abstract or visionary paintings — also created immediate, impressionistically sensitive works.

His painting of lilacs, reminiscent of the neorealist school of painting of the 1930s, captivates us with its pastel color and dreamy mood, primarily serving to solve aesthetic problems. The well-modeled jug and the perspective depicted through a veil of fog demonstrate Saarts’ ability as a painter but the main charm of the piece lies in its enigmatic, not precisely defined space – are we in a room or a sunny coastal landscape?
