After graduating from Pallas, Lembit Rull (1904-1987) worked as a teacher at the Tartu Art Institute and as a set designer at the Vanemuine Theatre. His greatest strength was his ability to create harmonious compositions and designs, both in landscape paintings and still-lifes.

In this charming piece from 1943, Rull has seemingly stopped time to offer the viewer time for quiet contemplation. While the bright springtime tulips have been a favorite theme of many artists, Rull adds exciting accessories here: a coffee cup, a book, and a vase with spring flowers on a checkered tablecloth, instilling a sense of peace and security – something that was so longed for considering the year it was created. However, the little animal, a little timidly exploring its surroundings, adds excitement and even humor to the piece. The artist has cleverly encoded a moment for himself and a fresh spirit into this painting.
