Laurentsius’ (b. 1969) love of placing his work in unexpectedly pompous gold frames or, conversely, framing it with cool, minimalist silver metal, always leaves the viewer with a reason to expect something exciting again. As such, “Blue umbrella” moves away from the traditional rectangular painting format and becomes, as it were, a 3D model of airy shadow. The work achieves its effect through watercolor-like transparent paint surfaces, complemented by thicker, pasty parts and bright accents.

Painter Mall Nukke, who knows the Eastern cultural space well, describes the work as a Japanese object painted in delicate halftones: “Cherry blossoms can be glimpsed against the background of a beautiful light blue sky, ochre halftones that let the geisha’s parasol glimpse the golden sunlight. If we are not used to this kind of depiction, then the edge decoration, metal and screws of the painting are truly in Laurentsius’ style. It strictly frames the oriental sensitivity of the parasol. The charm of contrast!”
