Karl-Kristjan Nagel (b. 1977), who graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 1999, is part of the famous Nagel art dynasty, being the grandson of Kalju Nagel and the son of Lemming Nagel. The artist loves to experiment and varies his work with themes, techniques and use of color. His diverse paintings range from realistic views of nature to metaphysical compositions, yet they are all united by a strong traditional school of painting — you have to know the rules before you can break them.

The oil painting “Electra Glide in Blue” depicts the iconic final scene from the 1973 James William Guercio-directed feature film of the same name, starring the infamous Robert Blake. Inspired by the film’s masterful depiction of Arizona, one of the most visually stunning states in the US, Nagel also brings the famous mountains of the Grand Canyon state and the seemingly endless I-10 highway to the painting. Right in the middle of it, he places the dutiful police officer John Wintergreen who plays a significant role in the painting not only in the narrative but also in the composition.
