Karl Burman Jr (1914-2001) is a typical romantic in his paintings of Tallinn’s Old Town – he is captivated and inspired by a beautiful motif and then captures it quickly and freshly. Sunny Viru Street allows for just that. Painted in a fluid watercolor technique, the painting has both the generality of the buildings and more specific details.
The depth of the street space is well-captured according to the classical perspective theory. From a distance, the small human figures appear like dots of color but upon closer inspection, we discover that these figures are actually in motion, each with its own tone and body language!
