One of Estonia’s most renowned watercolorists, Karl Alexander von Winkler (1860-1911) is known for his depictions of cityscapes and landscapes. His romantic watercolor paintings stand out for their mastery of technique and rich color palette. Winkler also had a talent for finding beauty in an otherwise modest motif.
This is how “River view with an old bridge” gets a new life, which under Winkler’s hand takes on a charming and unique romantic look. Stories of chirping children over the old bridge, wild animals coming to the shore to get refreshments, and spring floods come to life imperceptibly. Using both melting and dry watercolor techniques in one piece, Winkler considers it important, in addition to telling stories, to convey a genuine experience of nature, summer freshness, and delicious shimmer.
