Kalju Nagel (1918-2005) who found his own style under the tutelage of Aleksander Vardi, was a true patriot of Southern Estonia. He became a renowned landscape painter for whom the powerful views of the natural world of Terra Mariana and his love for it went hand in hand.

“Summer by a light blue lake” belongs to the stories of Astrid Lindgren – Nagel is just as warm, safe and loving in his approach to this summer view, which captivates with its fresh green, invigorating light blue and the sun-drenched yellow of the dandelions. The painting is characterized by its picturesqueness and airiness with the lake, forests, hillsides, sky and a field with a farmhouse in the background forming a unified coloristic whole. The compositional illusion of spatial depth is enhanced by the masterful reflection in the lake.
