Kalju Nagel (1918-2005), who faithfully continued the traditions of Pallas’ neorealist painting school in his work, repeatedly poeticizes the dome-like landscapes of South Estonia but he always finds some new nuance, a new angle to depict an otherwise simple motif. In this late summer view, the yellow grain field in the foreground, the forested domes in the middle and the border fading into the mist in the background, all blend harmoniously together with the blue sky on the high horizon. The mood of the piece is peaceful, Estonian and homely.
