Kalju Nagel, one of the so-called post-Palladians of Tartu, was a well-known landscape painter whose heart belonged to the romantic domed landscape of South Estonia, with its many lakes and mountain slopes.

Nagel paints one of Lake Pühajärv’s neighboring lakes, Äidu, with coloristic risk – his brushwork is lively, rich in shades and conveys aerial perspective well, with white clouds in the blue sky balancing the rich palette of the lower half of the composition. However, the most eye-catching part of the painting belongs to the iridescent lake in the center, which in its reflection connects both the dark green forest fringe and the aforementioned richly textured sky.
