In the velvety mezzotint technique series “Estonian Landscapes” Kaljo Põllu (1934-2010) created over 30 intaglio prints over the decades. The hazy designs, depicting fragments of Estonian nature, are dominated by a uniform gloom – the same mysterious, mythical aura that has characterized Põllu’s other works since the 1970s.

A wild boar with a Nordic look and a strong character, looking deep into your eyes from behind the trees, is depicted larger than life. A powerful animal, aware of its power but not using it for evil. It leans its body against an old tree trunk, glances at you and then walks on. Work needs to be done, digging the ground, setting the plow…
