The early creative period of the great Estonian surrealist artist Jüri Arrak includes works that are both technically and figuratively fascinating, including the motif of the mysterious onlooker. The latter includes both the oil painting “The Viewer” (private collection) and the graphic print “The Spectator”.

The figure on the technically intriguingly ornamental black and white background opens up like an open window to a mysterious bluish-gray figure. Arrak does not depict any part of his face except his eyes, but we can still understand that he is friendly and smiling.

The matte and glossy black surfaces next to each other add spatiality to the central figure, and the viewer senses a modern pop art style in the work. However, the overall approach of the work connects it more to the modern formal language of the 1960s.
