The painting by Jüri Arrak (1936-2022) in the last year of his life is symbolic in many ways. Depicting masks, dolls and metaphors through his work was one of his most important tools and now he tells the story of the doll itself – as a kind of expression of gratitude. On the other hand, he looks back on the past and considers himself a doll with new discoveries of the universe ahead of him.
Arrak has said: “A painting must have the right feeling, the world behind the picture is inside the painting – everything is one. In painting, you must be so free that you do not obey anyone, not even thought. That is freedom. Life is beautiful and it must be preserved. A person must find such a path that he can say that he is discovering the secrets of the universe. The universe is endless.”
The background of the painting is as if at the mercy of inexorable forces: the characters seem to flow into the unknown from hot currents, merging, changing and transforming themselves. A companion on the journey is his own Doll icon who, showing light, moves from the deep brown of the earth to the light blue of resurrection and hope. Thank you and see you again!
