Jüri Arrak’s (1936-2022) animal portraits are personal and warm. The artist treats animals as equal to humans, sometimes as symbols of nature or even superiors. For example, in a piece depicting a powerful male lion, the animal is depicted as larger than a human being.

The lion’s eyes look straight into the viewer’s heart. They are full of timeless wisdom while the body posture exudes self-confidence. The leader is followed by human children, who are obediently placed next to their master. But a wise leader does not rush, his steps are considered and firm, his decisions are unwavering even in difficult choices.

And in the midst of all this, he does not forget warmth and care, and that is exactly what Jüri Arrak himself was like. The print is reproduced in Jüri Hain’s book about Jüri Arrak’s graphic art (2006, p. 43).
