Johannes Võerahansu (1900-1980), who painted one of the most influential paintings in the history of Estonian art, “The Pasture Yard”, has been called the most prominent landscape painter in Estonia. The development of his style was influenced by Nikolai Triik, Ants Laikmaa, Kaarel Liimand, and partly also by Ado Vabbe.

Still painted in the best Pallas traditions, the panoramic landscape of South Estonia is a masterful work in terms of color, one of the most beautiful nature paintings by Johannes Võerahansu. Farms on a hillside and in a valley, fields alternating with forest patches in a domed landscape, a wide horizon and a slightly cloud-shaded blue sky create the feeling that everything is still the same, that the idyllic Estonia of the 1930s still exists and nothing has changed.

The Van Gogh-like brushwork, which is rarely seen in Võerahansu’s work, also deserves special attention. The painting will be auctioned from the Richard Kaljo estate.
