Celebrating his 60th birthday this year, painter and jewelry artist Ivar Kaasik has an exceptional story and is one of the most interesting artists of his generation. Born in Saaremaa, he entered the Estonian State Art Institute to study jewelry art, received a scholarship to the Halle Academy of Arts in East Germany, and after graduating from both schools, moved to Berlin in 1992 to live and work permanently.

Cultivating figurative and abstract painting with equal effectiveness, he focuses on describing human relationships in multi-figured, large-scale works. Kaasik’s paintings are narratives full of subtext, like this large-scale piece before us. Containing still-life, genre painting, animal and landscape painting, the result is filled with images that trigger the viewer’s imagination, not the least of which is the play with history and glamorous, luxurious retro.
