Ilmar Kimm (1920-2011) became a painting lecturer at the Tartu State Art Institute in 1948. He mastered almost all painting genres and was therefore in demand as a tutor. In the 1960s, his color palette became brighter and his painting style became freer. Although by then he had already been invited to Tallinn as a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts, South Estonia remained in his heart, and so he made a creative journey to what is now Tartu, Jõgeva, Valga and Põlva counties.

The best of Kimm’s work, alongside portraits, are his landscape paintings. This painting, depicting the simultaneous tenderness and full maturity of autumn, demonstrates the artist’s ability to find beauty and excitement in an unpretentious motif. By pressing the brush into several colors at once, he creates an impressionistically bright painting that takes the viewer straight to the heart of Estonian autumn.
