In the second half of the 1950s, the influence of impressionism in Estonian painting grew stronger, which did not fail to touch the work of Ilmar Kimm (1920-2011). Several brightly colored paintings date from the summer of 1955, which convey an endless summer idyll, sea breeze and beach sand.
It is no wonder, because at that time he was a lecturer at the Estonian State Institute of Art and took students on summer creative trips to the Estonian nature. The balanced composition with the coastline and the painter sitting in the middle of it confirms the words of art historian Mai Levin: “Kimm’s solid and stable professional level is always combined with a positive and calm attitude towards the depicted object.”
