Hugo Lepik (1905-2001) was known before the war as a lecturer at the Estonian National School of Art and Design and as a graphic artist. Alongside this, he increasingly found himself as a painter, which eventually became his main field of work in Sweden where the artist moved in 1944. Having settled in Gothenburg, Lepik also worked as a gallerist in the same city in addition to his painting career.

The painting “Roses” well-characterizes his post-war dense and definite style. The lush brushwork emphasizes the power of the rose flowers, and the emphasized shadows bring out their graceful beauty. The neutral warm brown and sky blue chosen as background colors further contribute to highlighting the natural beauty of the bouquet.
