Helve Viidalepp (1921-1979), who began her studies at Pallas in 1943 and graduated from the Tartu State Institute of Art in 1948 – the daughter of the well-known Paide artist August Roosileht – stood out with her portraits and still-lifes, especially in the art scene of the 1950s and early 1960s. In addition to her lecturer Johannes Võerahansu, her style was also influenced by her artist husband Ants Viidalepp, whose night scene “Catching lobsters” (1957, Art Museum of Estonia) the piece is somewhat reminiscent of.

Next to the jug, which has a nostalgic effect today, brightly colored crayfish repeat the tones of this spotted pattern. The warm light, which has a refreshing summer-like effect on the painting, takes the viewers’ thoughts to a pleasantly lazy afternoon, which certainly includes a bite of fresh crayfish.
