Gustav Mägi (1914-1994), a Pallas graduate, worked in several different genres simultaneously after fleeing to Sweden. However, his attention to coloristic problems continued to connect him with what he had studied in Tartu and the brightly colored impressionist-pointillist “A river view with sailing boats” painted in Sweden confirms this.

In the painting depicting a sunny day in a riverside landscape, we see granite cliffs and a red-painted shore hut, which refer to Scandinavia but the vegetation and the prevailing atmosphere could easily be transferred to Estonia. By that moment, only a few years had passed since Mägi left his homeland and the views of home were still in his heart and mind.
