Evald Okas (1915-2011) became a student of the State School of Art and Industry as a young boy and in 1941, also graduated from the State College of Art with a degree in painting. His passion for art was expressed in his true dedication to teaching, in addition to his work as an active artist.

In 1958, Okas had the opportunity to visit the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Based on his travel impressions, he created a series about a modern woman, the central character of which was a local lady with a bold attitude and fashion sense. His series in intaglio technique is both acutely socially critical and aesthetically enjoyable.

When visiting Amsterdam, Okas’ eyes were not lost on the women of the free-spirited port city whose self-aware character provided the artist with ample inspiration. “The girl from Amsterdam” is also a testament to the virtuosic artist’s ability to capture the essential only using minimal lines.
