In the 1960s, Evald Okas (1915-2011) had the opportunity to travel to different continents more than any other artist who remained in Estonia. The man returned from his travels with paintings that carried impressions of the most interesting people he met on his journey. Each such portrait also included a piece of local specificity, bringing the mystery of distant lands directly to Estonians.
A beautiful woman from Montreal in 1967 whom he met in a local bar, is likely to have charmed Okas because of her high cheekbones and deep dark eyes, which seemed like an exciting challenge next to the Nordic models with fair skin. As if taken directly from nature, the light blue necklace, large earrings and a single gaze make the depicted young woman both exotic and captivating as she also has a good dose of confident defiance and sex appeal.
