This delicate drypoint scene, part of the works of the great traveler and virtuoso draughtsman Evald Okas (1915-2011) reflecting his experiences of his 1958 trip to Amsterdam, is one of the most exciting prints in his travel series and perfectly relates to the codes of 17th-century Dutch art.

During his journey, Okas experienced many things that were frowned upon or forbidden in his homeland. The intriguingly titled “Unexpected visitor” only gives indirect hints about what is happening in the scene. Who is the man who has arrived and what are his relations with the dark-haired woman who is obviously debating in her mind how to get rid of him? Here, Okas proves himself to be an excellent storyteller and a technically virtuosic master.
