The painting, which probably interprets the scandalous biblical story of King Herod and Salome who danced the dance of the seven veils, is typical of the work of Evald Okas (1915-2011) who adores allegories and female nudes as subjects for depiction but it is one of the few treatments of the famous plot in Estonian art.

The king’s gaze directed at Salome emphasizes the erotic undertones of the work, the woman in her proud nudity is aware of her carnal charms and her own worth. The eloquent narrative, placed in a small, intimate format, is a good example of Okas’ skill in constructing intensity within a picture.
