Esther Roode (1923-2007) who was sent to a prison camp in 1949 along with several other art students, did not abandon. Having studied at both Pallas and the Tallinn Art Institute after World War II, she developed a style of painting based on realism and late impressionism.
Like her husband, the painter Henn Roode, her favorite genres were portraiture and landscapes. However, while Henn dismantled landscapes into pieces to then reassemble them, Esther found suitable forms in nature itself and focused more on the tasteful harmony of color tones.
Her emotional and naturalistic style of depiction is well-executed here. She layers the landscapes on top of each other like rhythmic layers of cake, conveying the gradual dispersion of the fading sunlight. In this way, she gives the wildflowers in the foreground a chance to shine and paints each subsequent layer darker and darker, until the forest in the distance soon takes on a deep green hue, suggestive of slumber.
