Erich Pehap (1912-1981), a Pallas graduate originally from Viljandi, left Estonia in 1943, initially for Finland, then Sweden, and finally Canada where he finally settled. In Toronto, Pehap became one of the most renowned artists and was also appreciated by the country where he was based, combining Pallasian colorism and modern, geometric formal language in his own way.

The painting before us is a stylish genre piece, in which several aspects meet at the level of meanings. First, the artist paints the audience that has come to the exhibition, two fashionably and chicly dressed women whose attention is directed directly at the art objects. On the other hand, Pehap reproduces modernist semi-abstract works of art, both sculptures and the large-scale painting behind them. Third, a geometric stylization permeates the entire image of the gallery space, making it playfully multidimensional.
