So bright and light, so deep
and gentle is the calm mind.
I danced in the sky and in the fire,
I was swimming in the dark water.

Ah, how I missed the sparkles!
I got burned everywhere.
No, I wouldn’t have made it without you
so far, into yourself.

Doris Kareva “So bright and light, so deep

Painter, public figure and horticultural agronomist Enn Volmere (1908-1978) began participating in exhibitions as early as 1943. As a patriot of South Estonia, he was primarily interested in views of this area, and of course, Lake Pühajärv with its protruding peninsulas and romantic islets.

Especially in the 1970s, Volmere’s color scheme darkened, often expressed in deep blue, red, or green. In this view, too, he operates by alternating and mixing different shades of green, interspersed with stimulating creamy whites and vibrant yellows. The pasty, rich layer of color typical of Volmere’s style adds depth and tension to the already dignified view.
