The work of Enn Põldroos (b. 1933), a true master of Estonian painting, has always captivated art audiences with its picturesqueness and lush brushwork, and the magnificent solo exhibition opened at Kumu in 2024 was powerful proof of his versatile talent. The simple composition of branches and leaves evokes his trademark style – an open and free brushstroke and a presentation of a motif developed to the point of abstraction.

The painting radiates joy from the work done, joy from the colors but also a slightly lyrical sense of nature like that of the Impressionists. However, in the foreground we notice an unexpected compositional technique – the figure of a man walking in blue tones appears before our eyes from the colorful leaves. And in addition, a woman and a child are heading to the right! Under a skillful hand, it soon becomes perfectly suited to the context, and upon looking at the painting for a longer period of time, we realize that this little quirk must belong there.
