Enn Põldroos (b. 1933) has been one of the leading Estonian painters since the 1960s and the analysis and interpretation of his work is still relevant today. The powerful retrospective exhibition “Enn Põldroos. Museum of Obsessions” opened at Kumu at the end of last year, curated by Anders Härm, has also played an important role in understanding his art.
Põldroos’ abstract works often have a theme of balance and harmony in them – similar to his figurative paintings. By creating a spatial effect using shadow and light, the artist gives the impression as if two circular objects are approaching the viewer. These are his most iconic trademarks.
These are the silver spheres, which also appear on the cover of his recently published comprehensive monograph and the exhibition poster. The artist places them in an undefined space and plays with the viewer’s imagination, while also asking the question: can a two-dimensional painting express three-dimensionality?
