Enn Põldroos (1933-2025), who entered the Estonian art scene in a big way in the 1960s, was actively engaged in constructing his own personal style of expression during that decade, incorporating experiences from Fauvism, Expressionism and Academism.
In the painting “Nude with a mirror”, the expressionism that was fashionable in modernist art at the time resonates most in the modeling of the form itself. For Põldroos, the female nude is not so much erotic as it is an excuse to deal with color problems, questions of color. The artist chooses brown and ochre in rich shades as the main colors, contrasting with ten shades of whitish gray in the right corner of the composition to form a charming whole. But this tone also includes the mirror, which the model only looks at as if the wisdom of the world were hidden there and this is where the intrinsic intrigue of the painting emerges!
This work was exhibited at the Enn Põldroos retrospective exhibition “Museum of Obsessions” at Kumu in 2024-2025 and is reproduced in the accompanying book on page 131.
