Endel Kõks’ (1912-1983) series of suitcase-sized travel paintings, which began in the late 1970s, takes us to Germany in this 1982 piece. The purpose of the trip was to visit the graphic artist Anne-Reet Paris, and to enjoy new art exhibitions. So he arrived in Munich whose picturesque reminder of the Marienplatz in the city center with its imposing 19th century neo-Gothic town hall is before us.

From the same view, other buildings in the Old Town can also be found, forming a charming historical backdrop to the square. Equally interesting are the people whom Kõks groups as both tourists admiring the city’s beauty as well as locals going about their daily business.

The painting’s modern approach to lighting is innovative and charming in a way – Kõks does not use light-and-shadow modeling this time but rather focuses on conveying the figures’ own clothing and poses. And among them you will find all kinds of colorful characters!

The painting comes to us from the Endel Kõks estate.
