A separate chapter in Endel Kõks’ portfolio is the interpretation of art history, including giving new meanings to the works of famous masters. Paris and the artists who lived there were particularly inspiring to him as he considered it to be the mecca of modern art.
The painting “Marc and Bella in Paris,” from the Kõks heritage collection, falls into this category. Here, he quotes Marc Chagall’s famous painting of himself and his wife flying in the sky – a visual paraphrase of the romantic dreams of love of the young artist, who married in 1915.
The scene itself takes place in Paris, against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower and the city panorama, in front of women and men in love in spring, symbolizing the image of the city of love that accompanies myths. However, the main reason for choosing this particular location is related to Chagall himself because it was here that the artist lived for a long time.
In terms of his painting style, Kõks maintains a dialogue with the pre-World War II Paris School of Neorealism – the most modern art movement during his time studying at Pallas.
