Endel Kõks (1912-1983) graduated from Pallas as a student of Ado Vabbe in 1940. Mobilized into the German army at the end of the war, the artist went to live in Sweden in 1950. He was strongly influenced by modern and avant-garde art, which is why his work constantly took on new directions.

One of Kõks’ favorite themes throughout his life was the city with people on the street, in cafes, etc., of which he made elegant sketches, especially during his numerous trips. During his trip to Paris in 1965, he also completed this ink drawing, which captivates with the expressive faces of the figures and – as is the innate habit of Parisians – there is an indescribable grace in their movements. The blue-black-and-white colored work shows the former influence of his teacher Vabbe.
