Pallas graduate Endel Kõks (1912-1983) escaped to the free world in 1944 and took the opportunity to travel to its fullest. He sought the essential soul of each place. Thus, he did not become a traditional painter of travel pictures but rather a portraitist of the city’s aura, its deeper essence.

In this way, capturing the central square of Frankfurt’s Old Town, he is topographically accurate in depicting the facades of houses destroyed in World War II and later restored but he also brings out the vital emotion of the moment with the street life and flags and coats of arms.

Against the background of the painting’s rich blue tone, the red banners form an emotionally powerful contrast, drawing attention to the figures. Kõks at his very best. The travel painting comes to auction directly from the Endel Kõks estate.
