Elmar Kits (1913-1972), one of the leading artists of the Impressionist painting movement in Estonia, has depicted Estonian nature in all of his creative periods, including during World War II. This early spring landscape, probably painted in the early 1940s, captivates the viewer with its excellent rendering of a cold-bright atmosphere, picturesque airiness and freshness.

The gabled building, likely a hay barn, at the center of the composition brings a dimension of human activity into the seemingly untouched nature of the picture. The painting was given by the artist himself to Richard Kaljo from whose estate it is also coming up for auction.
