Eerik Haamer (1908-1994), one of the great names of the Pallas School, devoted a lot of time to depicting the nature of his new home, Sweden, after emigrating from Estonia in 1944. Longing for his home island of Saaremaa drew him especially to the coast, and so he fell in love with the island of Tjörn, which is popular with summer vacationers. He often painted and drew there but this panoramic painting is among his most powerful in terms of its vision.
The entire composition emphasizes movement, ever forward and beyond. The expressive red-blue-white color scheme of “Symphony of Colors” adds a tense mood to the natural approach and enhances the illusory dimension of depth of the picture. The artist’s mastery is proven by his ability to bring the richness of nature’s colors into a unified picturesque whole.
